The figs look great, and the mechs being great is a bonus as well! High expectations on this set since it's coming from Enlighten.

These look great. Enlighten's last theme (Thunder Mission) was really well done. They have improved their brick plastic and builds as well.
ReplyDeleteYeah, it seems they are expanding. There are also new City sets with a completely new minifig with large heads, looking like Manga minifigs, "Colorful City" 1131-37. These minifigs appear in another police-oriented theme "Battle Force" 1919-25. The standard minifigs are featured in the sets "Kyanite Squad" 2413-16. We had some sets in that theme before, now they go underwater. Enlighten has also released new firefighters sets 2801-10. Finally, they have some "Octonauts" sets with another minifig variant 3701-08. All these sets were released somewhen during 2018. This year, there will be some more stuff. For now, we know about 3901-05, 4001, 4002 Ali the Fox sets. Ali the Fox is a character from a Chinese cartoon.

These look really cool. Are they based on any particular source?
ReplyDeleteThey are based on the famous Chinese novel "Journey to the West", and one of its protagonists, Sun Wukong, the Monkey King. The novel has been adapted many times as TV series, movies, comics, ... Basically it's the same topic that we have already seen in the Fantasy Westward Journey sets from Winner. Concerning the sets and minifigs:
DeleteSun Wukong, of which we receive two versions (the one with the red legs, printed tiger-skin kilt and upper yellow body as seen in 3801, 3803, and 3805, and then the one as seen in 3804, 3806, and 3807) fights against various demons throughout the story.
3801 is a battle between Wukong and some underlings of the Bull Demon King, which is the reason why they look like minotaurs (it's a different mold than Lego's minotaur).
The scene in 3802 is the Water Curtain Cave at Mount Huaguo, where Wukong and the monkeys live in peace. When Wukong is on a journey to find enlightenment, a demon attacks the other monkeys. Accordingly, the minifig with the red face is the demon, the other three are monkeys.
3803 features the White Bone Demon, a female demon, which appears in human form and tries to trick people. Due to his magical abilities, Wukong is able to identify her in her true demon form.
In 3804, Wukong fights against an elephant demon. The small minifig is another monkey soldier.
In 3805, Wukong fights the two Horned Kings. The battle stretches across several chapters in the original story. The small purple minifig is a messenger, who is also described in the story (however, he is not related to the Golden and Silver Horned Kings and appears in a completely different chapter). He could easily serve as messenger for the Kings though.
The "mech" in 3806 is basically a "variant" of the Bull Demon King. It's one main feature of the story that characters have magical abilities and can also grow in size.
3807 is about the story of the Red Boy and his parents, the Bull Demon King and his wife, Princess Iron Fan.
Some of the elements included do not have to do anything with the original story, e. g. that "vehicles" in 3801 and 3805, and the dragon creature (whose form is rather odd, Asian dragons usually don't have wings and should be longer; this one looks more like an undead dragon from a Western movie) in 3803, but if you know the story, and as stated at the beginning, it is very famous in China, then you can identidy the different characters pretty easily. If you don't know the story than you certainly miss a part of the whole thing, but you can imagine your own stories of course.
Finally, the official English set names:
3801 Monster Encounter
3802 Robbery of the Mount Huaguo
3803 Execute Lady Skeleton
3804 Obstruction at Ridge Shituo
3805 Outwit Demon Brothers
3806 Battle with Bull Demon
3807 Fight the Red Boy
Best, Oederland
