XINH X0274: Sun WuKong Chinese Mythology Minifigures Preview

XINH XH1394 - Sun WuKong
XINH XH1395 - Na Zha
XINH XH1396 - Bai Suzhen
XINH XH1397 - Xu Xian
XINH XH1398 - Ao Bing
XINH XH1399 - Green Snake

I'm not too familiar with these characters but I do know Chinese history is very interesting. I would assume that their mythology is also interesting.

XINH's trying to make the most out of some unique molds they've made and I'm not complaining!

  1. Na Zha / Ne Zha is a very famous character in Chinese mythology. We've seen similiar minifigures before from Big Elephant, DG, and Lepin, reflecting Ne Zha as he appears in the game King of Glory. Here, XINH seems to refer to the recent Chinese anime focusing on him.

Ao Bing is the third son of the Dragon King of the East Sea. He also appears in the Ne Zha anime. No idea about the anime, but they fight against each other in the classic tale Investiture of the Gods, with Ne Zha killing Ao Bing. The two characters appear in the modern interpretation of the story from Enlighten, set numbers 2201-2212, https://downtheblocks.blogspot.com/2017/06/enlighten-2201-2211-creation-of-gods.html . Ao Bing is the guy with purple hair and white antlers in 2204 and 2211, Ne Zha the guy on fire wheels (unique mold), wielding a spear, as seen in 2206 and 2211.

Bai Suzhen aka White Snake, Green Snake, and Xu Xian are characters from the Legend of the White Snake. In the classic tale, the two snakes are demons. For a festival, the two demons transform into human form and meet Xu Xian, who lends them an umbrella. Later, Xu Xian and White Snake fall in love, which leads to troubles, as she is a demon (which is unknown to Xu Xian). The design of the XINH minifigures is based on the characters as depicted in an anime from 2019 (story seems to deviate from the classic one).

Sun Wukong is the famous Monkey King. Various brands have released minifigures in the context of the King of Glory game. In 2016, Winner came up with a theme focusing on his early adventures before he becomes enclosed under a mountain (as described in the famous Journey to the West), set numbers 5041-5051, Enlighten has an ongoing theme with a focus on his later adventures, e.g. rivalry with the Bull Demon King, his wife, Lady Iron Fan, and their son, the Red boy, as well as the battle with the two horned kings, set numbers 3801-3806, https://downtheblocks.blogspot.com/2019/01/enlighten-3801-3806-wukong-sets-preview.html .

Overall, it's certainly a nice addition. There are some drawbacks though. Given that the two snakes use a special mold for the lower body (as introduced by Lego for the Ninjago snakes), they can't be turned into "random" civilians easily. The hair piece on Xu Xian is out of place. It would have been a better choice to use the classic samurai hair piece with the top knot. The Monkey King's hair looks pretty stupid due to the hair bands. Yes, Lego uses the same piece for their new CMF, but this is just due to them recycling the piece introduced for Hanzo in the Overwatch theme. For Hanzo, it's fine. For a monkey king, it's not. Rather, it should look like this http://www.globaltimes.cn/galleries/155.html or this http://www.cinema.com.my/images/news/2015/7n_journeytothewestfilm00.jpg - that is, long, thin hair bands. Enlighten has created a unique mold, which they used for their Lü Bu minifig included in 1501A, see https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ny2-5yFuL6w/WRhLK5H-kfI/AAAAAAAAFRw/YjvbC2wIoHoGQ9GocUrrxsNUS4i3DBV3QCLcB/s1600/_DSC5604.JPG .
