DTB DTB100: Red King (Planet Hulk Villain) Mech MOC Preview

I was gonna put "minifig" in the title but there's no minifig here.

He was the villain in Planet Hulk. Thor Ragnarok was kinda inspired by it but instead of the Grandmaster, we have the Red King. Though like in Ragnarok, Thor finds an ally in Korg.

So this is him. It sucks that a lot of the reference pictures have inconsistent designs of the mech but at the same time it made me more open to just designing him myself. I don't have a lot of spare parts at home and so I had to makedo with what was there and this is what I ended up with.\

Parts used:
Head - Red Hulk minifig
Hands - Inspired (95% copied) HJLepin's Captain Marvel mech

I made this guy before I got the recent Iron Man DLP set which is unfortunate because that set came with a lot of gold pieces.

I first found out about them through TLG's Marvel Superheroes 2 game. He looked really awesome there and I wanted to recreate that in real life but I had limited parts and reverse-engineering him looks like a lot of work [if I was gonna rely on videos of him].

And so instead, I looked at other reference pictures. I concluded that he's basically a red skinned guy in a gold mech suit, with a sword, that makes him around the same size as the Hulk or a bit bigger. There are also some blue light effects around his body that I could try and recreate.

No minifig inside, it's just the head.

I made it so that the sword can be attached at the back as such, similar to how he does so in the video game.

Movable thrusters at the back. I don't even know if he has one or needs one but I added it to make the back look less empty.

The sword attaches through those two pieces. The hands can't hold it on its own and so requires those pieces.

Tada!

The feet are like that because I didn't have gold parts left, lol.

I wish I had a better head but Red Hulk was my best option, next to Red Skull.

Another option would be to erase the bone elements off of Red Skull's head.

(Digitally done.)
Which do you think you'll prefer?

If you're looking for instructions.. I'll be honest and say that I don't have the time to disassemble and reassemble him to show instructions. I instead recommend you guys to explore your parts and build one!

And as tips, these are what helped me a lot:

1) Organizing your parts. I didn't organize everything I had but enough of them to make the building process more simple and more efficient.

2) Learn from the mechs you already have (or for whatever build you might be making). For example, I took inspiration from HJLepin's hands while the overall frame was probably already imprinted on my mind through the countless combiner mechs we've had with minifigs before.

3) Patience. Building is a process, especially when you have no instructions with you to follow. Take your time; you're just having fun and you're not competing. Plus, have the patience to wait or look for new parts that you think might be better suited for your build. (Something I didn't do, woops!)

4) Look up other builders to inspire you or even teach you. I'm no expert builder so if you're looking for precise building advice from me, my first advice would be to ask elsewhere. Some others are more capable than me when it comes to that.

While I'm sure not all of you will find the build good-looking, (even I agree that it's not perfect) I know that I had fun building and learned a thing or two. When I get a bigger workspace, I'll definitely try making more builds!
