ALTERNATIVES: Brick Sets Similar To Lego Marvel's 2020 Toy Lineup

Right off the bat, which one do you prefer?

Lego recently previewed a couple of new Lego Marvel sets. (Specifically the ones previewed around April/May 2020.) Honestly, they look great and lots of people seem to be excited about them. For collectors that are more updated with recent knockoffs though, they're aware that there are similar, cheaper, or already available designs and sets that could be alternative options.

However, we won't talk much about minifigures. Honestly, we're disappointed. There are new designs, but no new characters. (I guess those new Iron Man suits could be counted as new? But that's a bit of a stretch by now.) As a result, we'll talk less about those. To be fair, Lego wins in terms of minifigures because bootlego or knockoff brick brands often release sets with the same old minifigure designs, not even alternate costumes. (We're talking about boxed or big brick sets, not minifigure-only sets.)

We listed the number of parts and the prices of the new 2020 sets below. Note that for other countries, prices are expected to be higher. $120 for that Helicarrier is already pretty high, but for countries like mine (the Philippines), it'll probably end up more expensive.



Avengers Helicarrier (76153) – 1244 pcs – $119.99

SY1415 Helicarrier with Nanofigs
This Sheng Yuan Helicarrier was previewed in late 2019 and is on many people's wishlists for the nanofigs included. It's similar to Lego's 2020 Helicarrier because it's a much smaller scale than what Lego previously released. The minifigures aren't new, but most people looking to buy this are looking for the helicarrier itself anyway.

Sembo 911 (or SY911) Extended Helicarrier
If you're looking for the opposite though and want a bigger Helicarrier, Sembo/Sheng Yuan previewed a larger Helicarrier (than what Lego initially released) years back. It's less of a Marvel set since Sembo released that Helicarrier with a Chinese-inspired crew and superhero instead of the Avengers or SHIELD.

Iron Man Hulkbuster Versus A.I.M. Agent (76164) – 456 pcs / USD$39.99
Providing an alternative Hulkbuster set is difficult because of the number of choices from the knockoff markets. To be fair, this new Hulkbuster is more inspired by the classic or comics counterpart while most of the bootlego Hulkbusters out there are based on the movies. So, if you want classic Hulkbuster, stick to this new Lego set.
XH1157 - XH1160 Hulkbuster with Minifigures
I'll list some of the Hulkbusters I think are worth looking at. Here are XINH's new bigfig-ish figures. They're much smaller than the build and aren't really brick built, but if you want a decent sized Hulkbuster that fits a minifigure, these might be worth checking out.

Decool 0316 / JiSi 10316
Another similar Hulkbuster that can fit a minifigure inside is this one from JiSi/Decool. It's got a more chibi-inspired look that others might prefer or find adorable at the least.

SY6399 Avengers vs Thanos with Combiner Hulkbuster
For a brick-built Hulkbuster, we really like this one from Sheng Yuan. It's actually a combined build from 7 minifigures. Each minifigure comes with parts and then if you have all them, you can build the Hulkbuster! It's mostly movie-inspired as well, but its whole body (minus the head) looks generic enough for a classic Hulkbuster look.

There are a lot more Hulkbuster sets out there, but I think this new one from Lego is a whole new kind of Hulkbuster since it's more comics-inspired and has a different head.
Iron Man Helmet (76165) – 480pcs / USD$59.99

SY1472 Star Soldier Iron Man Helmet (Light Up)
This is one of the more recent Iron Man helmets previewed from Chinese brands (as of this posting). It's also the most similar to Lego's new set, but this one has light-up features that the Lego helmet doesn't.

LZ19303 Iron Man Bust with Remote Control for Lighting

This one isn't just a helmet but a whole Iron Man bust. Biggest risk here though is that Lezhuang is an unknown brand outside of China, so we're not sure about quality. Click the caption link above to read more about it and its potential source design.

SY1383 Star Soldier Iron Man Bust with Moving Head and Lights
This SY1383 goes beyond by having a remote control movement feature while also having lights. Unfortunately, it's not an original design by Sheng Yuan. We're not sure if they have the permission of the designer. More details in the caption URL above.

SY7502 Star Soldier Iron Man Mini Busts

Last one on the list for the Iron Man helmets are these smaller Iron Man busts. They're not as detailed cause of their smaller scale, but smaller might be preferred by other people.

Avengers Tower Battle (76166) –  456pcs / USD$89.99

SH678 Extended Avengers Tower

I only have one alternative set for the Avengers Tower and it's this Sheng Yuan Extended Avengers Tower since most, if not all the others, are just the Age of Ultron Avengers Tower with different minifigures or additional builds (that aren't as good as the one with this particular set). It's a taller tower with additional floors that are built to look natural alongside the original design. It also came with 3 exclusive minifigures: Crossbones (Comic variant), White Wolf (Not Bucky Barnes), and Iron Stan (but this one was re-made by Kopf).

Gotta say though, I prefer the new brick-built A [for Avengers] instead of just a sticker.

Those are just some alternatives to these upcoming Lego Marvel 2020 sets. The knockoffs will be much cheaper and are mostly already available (as of this posting) -- some are even years old by now. 

This post is meant for people who can't wait to get their hands on Marvel sets right now or are looking for affordable deals; maybe for their kids or just themselves. But don't forget that if you want the best quality while supporting Marvel and the designers, it's always best to buy Lego. Plus, these new Lego sets, especially the Hulkbuster, are pretty good on their own.
